"What is your biggest achievement?" sounds easy, yet many candidates freeze or pick a story that proves nothing. Interviewers want to know what you consider valuable, how you work, and what results you can repeat. Here is how to answer with examples.

What interviewers look for

  • A real result with a measurable outcome
  • Your personal role, not the team's
  • Skills that match the job
  • Humility with evidence
StepWhat to sayLength
SituationContext and goal1-2 lines
ActionWhat you did, specifically3-4 lines
ResultNumbers or clear outcome1-2 lines
LinkWhy it matters for this role1 line

This is a close cousin of the STAR method, with a closing link to the job.

Example 1: experienced candidate

"Last year my team's order-processing time was 3 days, and customers were complaining. I mapped the process, found two approval steps we could merge, and built an Excel tracker for the team. Processing time dropped to 1.5 days and complaints fell by 40% in two months. I would bring the same process thinking to this role."

Example 2: fresher

"In my final year I led a four-member team for a college project on a student attendance app. I wrote the backend and tested it with 120 classmates. It cut attendance time per class from 8 minutes to 2, and our department adopted it for the semester. It taught me to ship something people actually use."

Example 3: non-work achievement

Freshers can use sports, volunteering, or fundraising: "I organised a college fest sponsorship drive and raised Rs 1.2 lakh from 9 local businesses, against a Rs 75,000 target." Show effort, a number and learning.

Choose an achievement you can talk about for two minutes with details. Pick depth over size.

Choosing the right story

  1. List three results from the last two years.
  2. Pick the one closest to the job requirements.
  3. Check you can say your own role in one sentence.

Use the job description to pick which skills to stress. If the question is linked to others like a time you failed or a conflict at work, prepare a small story bank with four or five stories.

Mistakes to avoid

  • No numbers: "I did great work" convinces nobody.
  • Using "we" throughout: state your own part.
  • Boasting: credit the team once, truthfully.
  • Irrelevant story: avoid a school prize for a job needing project skills.

Quick practice

Write your answer in six bullets, say it aloud twice, and time it. Keep it between 60 and 90 seconds. Rehearse with other staples such as strengths and why should we hire you.

Follow-up questions to expect

Interviewers often probe: What was the hardest part? What would you do differently? How did you measure the result? Who helped you? Prepare one line for each. Keep documents or screenshots of the result in case someone asks for proof, and make sure the numbers in your answer match your resume exactly.

Put your biggest achievement on your resume first

The achievement you pick for the interview should be the first bullet under your latest role, with the same numbers. Interviewers read your resume before they ask the question, so both must match.

ATS keywords to include

achieved, delivered, reduced, increased, led, launched, saved, grew, improved, optimised

Before and after: rewrite your bullets

Before (weak)After (strong)
"Did well in project" Led a 4-member team to build an attendance app used by 120 students, cutting roll-call time from 8 to 2 minutes
"Part of award-winning team" Raised Rs 1.2 lakh in sponsorships against a Rs 75,000 target from 9 businesses
"Helped increase sales"Grew repeat orders 18% in six months through a follow-up campaign

Frequently asked questions

Can a fresher use an academic achievement?

Yes. Projects, competitions and internships all work if you show your role and the result.

Should the achievement be recent?

Preferably within the last two to three years.

What if I have no big achievement?

Choose a smaller result with a clear outcome. A real Rs 20,000 saving beats a vague large claim.

How long should the answer be?

60 to 90 seconds.
