Sales interviews test results, not résumés. Managers want proof you can hit targets, handle rejection and follow a process. These are the questions that come up most for sales executive roles in India, with answer frameworks you can adapt.

1. Tell me about yourself

Keep it sales-flavoured: a line on background, a line on numbers, a line on why this role. Use the structure in tell me about yourself.

2. What was your last target and did you hit it?

Give figures. "Target was Rs 12 lakh a quarter and I closed Rs 13.8 lakh, 115%." Freshers can use internship, campus or club sales: fundraising, event tickets, or a college fest sponsorship.

3. How do you handle objections?

ObjectionApproach
"Too expensive"Ask what they compare it to, then show cost per use or ROI
"Need to think"Ask what is unclear, and set a follow-up date
"Using a competitor"Ask what they would change about it
No responseSwitch channel: call, WhatsApp, email

4. Walk me through your sales process

Lead sourcing, qualification, pitch, follow-up, close, handover. Mention numbers: 60 calls a day, 12 meetings a week, 20% conversion.

Interviewers remember process plus numbers. "I made calls" is forgettable; "60 calls, 12 meetings, 3 closures a week" is not.

5. How do you handle rejection?

Treat it as data. Count rejections per sale (say 8 to 1), review which pitches failed, and adjust. Give a real example.

6. Sell me this pen

Do not list features. Ask what they write with and why, then link the pen to that need. This tests discovery, not product knowledge.

7. What do you know about our product?

Research the company before you go, as the guide on questions to ask the interviewer advises. Mention one customer segment and one competitor.

8. Which CRM tools have you used?

Salesforce, Zoho CRM, HubSpot, LeadSquared, or even Excel. Say how you tracked pipeline stages.

9. Where do you see yourself in 3 years?

Answer with growth in sales: key accounts, team lead. See where do you see yourself in 5 years.

10. Salary expectations

Sales pay mixes fixed and variable. Ask about the split and read variable pay in CTC and the expected CTC question.

Fresher tips

  • Show persuasion in college: events, fundraising, part-time jobs.
  • Practise a 60-second pitch for any product.
  • Prepare your resume with sales fresher resume format.

Questions to ask the interviewer

  • What is the monthly or quarterly target for this role, and what share of reps hit it?
  • What is the fixed and variable split, and when are incentives paid?
  • Are leads provided, or do I source them?
  • What does the first 90 days look like?

These show you think like a closer. Also confirm whether the role is field sales or inside sales, since travel and cost reimbursements change real take-home.

Mock answer: handling a missed target

"In Q2 I closed 82% of my Rs 10 lakh target. I reviewed lost deals, found that 6 of 10 stalled at pricing, built a one-page ROI sheet, and closed 118% the next quarter." Own the miss, show the fix, and end on the number.
